Honoring our Experiences: HAND STITCHED QUILT BLOCK TEXTILE WORKSHOP with Sonié Joi Thompson-Ruffin
Date: Juneteenth, Thursday, June 19th. 2025
Time: 11:30 AM – 12:45 PM
Location: Albers Classroom, Crystal Bridges Museum of Art
Join us for a hands-on, beginner friendly workshop exploring the past, present, and future of South Fayetteville through the art of quilting. Participants will engage with historical images, poetry, and community memory to design and stitch individual quilt blocks that honor the people, places, and textures that shape the neighborhood. Under the inspiration of Sonié Joi Thompson-Ruffin with support by the Hillfolk team, the public is invited to hand sew and contribute to the community quilt by making their own block using cyanotype and hand stitched adornments.
Sonié Joi Thompson-Ruffin is a celebrated artist with deep roots in the region, with work exhibited globally, including the Smithsonian, The White House, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. With her deep knowledge of history, symbolism, and the land, Sonié will guide the artistic vision of the collective quilt, supported by Hillfolk, a Northwest Arkansas textile studio dedicated to community-centered craft. Together, they’ll help shape a work of art built through stitching, storytelling, and shared memory.
