Join textile artist Olivia Clanton and learn the beautiful art of natural dyeing with fresh & dried flowers and other seasonal vegetation! We will experiment with over-dyeing, the process of dipping dyed fabric in an indigo vat, altering colors based on PH levels. Students will learn how to create a wide variety of colors on fabric using natural plants such as ukon, marigold, osage, cochineal bugs and indigo.

Class Materials

Each participant will have everything they need to create two silk bandanas and will leave the class with confidence in natural dye concepts such as mordanting, identifying fibers, color interactions with indigo, over-dye and bundle dye.

About our Teacher

Olivia Mae Clanton (b. 1995, she/her) is a textile artist, quilt maker, and craft educator based in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Clanton earned her BFA in Fiber with an emphasis in socially engaged art practices from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2017. Olivia is a recipient of a Rocket Grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation and co-founded Open House, a community space for exhibitions and education in Kansas City, Missouri. From 2017-2019, Olivia organized free classes based in STEAM out of Garage School, a detached garage turned classroom. She received an Art in the Loop artist residency in 2018, and an Arts and Entrepreneurship residency at UArk in 2022. Olivia is now a practicing artist and educator, teaching craft processes and knowledge in non-traditional spaces.

Workshop FAQs

We rely on an accurate attendance count to make important arrangements for our workshops. If an attendee needs to withdraw from a workshop, they must inform us in writing via email to olivia@hillfolk.com 30 days prior to the first day of the scheduled workshop. Hillfolk will confirm the receipt of the cancellation within three business days.
For any cancellations that are made more than 30 days prior to the workshop, you will be charged a non-refundable administrative fee of $35 for 1-day events and $75 for 3-day events.
Cancellation requests made between 7 and 30 days prior to the start of the workshop will be charged a minimum of 50% of the original workshop fee.
No refunds will be available for cancellations within one week of the workshop. Please take this into account when you sign up for a workshop.
Hillfolk reserves the right to cancel or reschedule any workshop for any reason, including canceling a workshop that does not meet minimum registration requirements or canceling a workshop due to inclement weather. If Hillfolk cancels a workshop, paid registrants will be given full refunds. Rescheduled workshop information will be communicated on the Hillfolk website.
